The Sentence Nobody Tested
Richer Soul Podcast • Episode 512• Mike Staver
The Modern Problem
Most people describe their lives as feeling chaotic, overstimulated, and reactive, and assume the cause is external, the news, the phone, the pace of work. Mike Staver’s conversation with Rocky Lalvani argues something less comfortable: the chaos is usually internal, and it survives because nobody stopped to test it.
The Hidden Pattern
Mike traces his own version of this back to a single sentence. As a young man set on flying jets in the Navy, his father told him he had bad eyesight and wasn’t good at math, so flying wasn’t realistic. Mike accepted it without argument and walked away from the dream. Decades later he discovered his eyesight had always been fine. The belief had never been tested. It had simply been accepted, and it quietly rerouted a life.
The Assumption We Carry
that our beliefs, especially the ones handed to us early by people we trust, are simply true because they came from somewhere authoritative. Mike names the harder question directly: do you believe what you believe because you actually believe it, or because you were taught to? Most people, in his experience, have never separated the two.
The Clearer Lens
Mike’s framing of events as emotionally neutral cuts through a lot of noise. The event and the feeling arrive together, almost instantly, which makes it feel like the event caused the feeling. It didn’t. The belief attached to the event did. Two people can leave the same room, the same diagnosis, the same lottery win, with opposite reactions, because they are reacting to different interpretations of the same neutral fact. This is also where his more practical instruction lives: deal with the outcome, not the intention. The person standing across from you experiences your behavior, not what you meant by it.
The Implication for Life
if the chaos is coming from untested belief rather than from the world itself, then the fix isn’t more control over external circumstances. It’s the much smaller, much harder habit of pausing between what happened and what you’ve decided it means, and asking whether that meaning was ever actually yours.
One Question to Sit With
do you believe what you believe because you actually believe it, or because you were taught to, and have you ever stopped long enough to find out which?
About Mike Staver
Most people trying to lead and live well are doing it without an anchor. Today’s guest, Mike Staver, has spent decades inside the rooms where leaders and others admit what they will not say out loud to anyone else, and he’s reached a conclusion: people don’t rise to the level of their intentions. They live at the level of their behavior. Mike is an executive advisor, Speaker Hall of Fame inductee, and author of the new book Navigating Crazy. Today we’re talking about what actually keeps people steady when everything around them isn’t.
