Ep 485 The Entrepreneur’s Anxiety Problem: Why Money Won’t Fix Your Broken Heart with Justin Breen

Why Money Won’t Fix Your Broken Heart: What Every Business Owner Needs to Know

Richer Soul Podcast • Episode 485 • Justin Breen

Money won’t fix your broken heart. Success won’t solve it. And scaling your business without healing first might actually be making things worse.

This is the uncomfortable truth that Justin Breen discovered after building multiple successful companies, achieving financial success, and reaching the pinnacle of what society tells us to chase. In a recent conversation about business, leadership, and what really matters, Justin shared insights that challenge everything we’ve been taught about success, money, and fulfillment.

If you’re a business owner asking “I got rich, now what?” this episode will change how you think about your company, your leadership, and your life.

The Problem With Scaling Your Business Without Healing First

Justin Breen has spent the last 20 years as a journalist and entrepreneur, listening to thousands of people share their deepest struggles. What he discovered is disturbing: almost everyone is miserable, and they’re not talking about it.

“Most of the world has been conditioned by things that don’t make them happy, and they’re scaling essentially on happiness,” Justin explained. This observation led him to explore the etymology of common business words, and what he found is revealing.

The word “business” comes from the Latin word “bisignus,” which means anxiety. So when you scale your business, you’re literally scaling your anxiety. The word “sale” means dull and dirty. The word “religion” means to bind. These aren’t coincidences. We’re living in a world of constructs where we’re scaling things that people aren’t even aware of what they mean.

For business owners, this has profound implications. You might be building a company that’s more successful on paper while becoming more anxious, disconnected, and unhappy in reality. The metrics that look good on a spreadsheet might be destroying your heart.

Money Beyond Your Basic Needs Doesn’t Increase Happiness

One of the most liberating truths Justin shared is this: once your basics are covered, more money doesn’t change your happiness.

“I’ve had years where I’ve made a lot of money and it didn’t really mean anything to me at all,” Justin said. He’s lived in luxury, visited exclusive islands, and experienced the lifestyle that most entrepreneurs dream of achieving. His conclusion? It’s empty.

This isn’t a moral judgment. It’s not about money being evil or business being wrong. It’s simply the reality that most entrepreneurs discover too late: the external achievements don’t solve the internal problems. A bigger house, a nicer car, or a more impressive bank balance won’t heal your wounds, fix your relationships, or make you feel genuinely fulfilled.

The irony is that many business owners chase money specifically because they’re trying to heal something inside. They’re trying to prove their worth, escape their past, or fill a void that money can never touch.

Why Your Kids Are More Miserable Than They Should Be

This problem extends beyond individual business owners. It flows down to the next generation.

Justin has raised two sons, ages 13 and 11, in a successful upper middle class environment. Yet his 13-year-old recently told him, “Dad, school’s a prison.” And Justin’s response was simple and honest: “Yes, it is a prison.”

Schools have bells. They have set meal times. They have structured conditioning that teaches compliance over curiosity, obedience over intuition. And parents aren’t helping the situation because they’re not listening to their children.

“Parents don’t listen,” Justin emphasized. “They talk at their kids instead of talking with them.” When children try to express their struggles or emotions, parents often respond with dismissal. “Just get over it.” “Stop complaining.” “That’s not a big deal.” This teaches children to disconnect from their feelings, to hide their authentic selves, and to pursue external validation instead of internal truth.

What does love spell for kids? TIME. Presence. Connection. Not gifts. Not achievements. Not the newest technology or the biggest house.

When parents haven’t healed their own hearts, they can’t truly listen to their children’s hearts. Instead, they pass down their own unhealed trauma, their anxiety, and their disconnection. The cycle continues.

The Difference Between Thinking and Feeling

Most entrepreneurs live almost entirely in their heads. They overthink. They strategize. They analyze. They think about thinking. And in the process, they bypass their hearts completely.

“I spend all my time in my heart,” Justin said. “People are overthinking everything and the heart is actually far more powerful than the brain. But we’ve been taught to think therefore I am, to think about thinking and it’s bypassing your heart.”

This is a revolutionary statement for the business community because we’re trained to trust our minds. Logic. Data. Analytics. These are the languages of business success. But what if the heart knows something the brain can’t access?

Throughout human history, the greatest innovations, the deepest connections, and the most meaningful work have come from people following their heart despite what their brain was telling them. Entrepreneurs who built companies that changed the world didn’t do it by overthinking. They did it by feeling what was needed and having the courage to pursue it.

The question isn’t whether you should think or feel. You need both. But the hierarchy matters. When feeling leads and thinking supports, you create from a place of alignment. When thinking dominates and feeling is suppressed, you create from a place of anxiety and disconnection.

Breaking Free From Social Conditioning

Robert Johnson, a disciple of Carl Jung who worked extensively on shadow and mask behavior, said something that captures this perfectly: “For a select few, there is a determination to seek liberation from social hypnosis.”

For a select few. Not everyone. Just those willing to wake up and see the constructs we’re all living in without awareness. Those willing to question why we do what we do. Those brave enough to break free from the conditioning that’s been installed since childhood.

This is extremely isolating and lonely. When you can see that the entire world is scaling anxiety, scaling things that don’t make people happy, while most people are blind to it, you feel profoundly alone. You see things others aren’t ready to see. You understand things others aren’t prepared to understand.

But this awareness also comes with responsibility. If you can see it, what are you going to do about it? Are you going to keep playing the game? Or are you going to create something different?

Justin’s answer was to create AURUM, a healing sanctuary for visionaries. To co-found Corvia.AI, a platform that teaches people to create music and songs using artificial intelligence, because music is a fast track into your own soul and heart. And to write a book that’s controversial because it tells the truth about what’s really happening in our society and our systems.

The Role of Heart-Based Leadership

What business owners desperately need to understand is that true leadership starts with a healed heart.

When you lead from anxiety, you create anxious teams. When you lead from disconnection, you create disconnected organizations. When you lead from unhealed trauma, you pass that trauma down through your company culture.

Conversely, when you lead from your heart, when you do the internal work to heal your wounds and connect with your authentic self, you create entirely different results. You build companies where people actually want to work. Where innovation flows naturally. Where the mission matters more than the metrics.

This doesn’t mean ignoring the business fundamentals. It doesn’t mean abandoning profit or profitability. It means making sure that profit is a result of doing something meaningful, not the only thing that matters.

Justin puts it simply: “The world is just a giant broken heart with individual broken hearts. That’s really what it is, to simplify it as simple as possible.” And the way to fix that is through healing. Through presence. Through listening. Through leading with love instead of fear.

What This Means for Your Business Today

So what do you do with this information? How do you apply it to your business right now?

Start by asking yourself some hard questions. What are you actually building? Not the official mission statement or the elevator pitch. But deep down, what are you building? Are you building something from your heart, or are you building something from your anxiety?

Who are you becoming in the process of building this company? Is it someone you respect? Someone your children would want to emulate? Or are you becoming someone you don’t recognize, someone driven by metrics and fear?

Are you listening to your team, or are you talking at them? Are you creating an environment where people can bring their whole selves, or are you demanding compliance and disconnection?

Are you healed enough to lead others? Or are you passing your unhealed wounds onto everyone around you?

These aren’t easy questions. And the answers might be uncomfortable. But they’re the questions that matter.

The Path Forward

The good news is that awareness is the first step. Once you see that you’ve been scaling anxiety instead of building something meaningful, you can choose differently. Once you recognize that money beyond your basic needs won’t solve your internal problems, you can stop chasing it as the answer. Once you understand that your unhealed heart is affecting everyone around you, you can commit to doing the work.

This work is hard. It might require you to go through what Justin calls the dark night of the soul. It might require you to dissolve old patterns, end relationships that aren’t serving you, or completely reimagine your business. It will be painful. It will be lonely. It will feel like you’re going backward even though you’re actually moving forward.

But on the other side of that pain is freedom. True freedom. Not the freedom that comes from money or success or achievement. But the freedom that comes from alignment. From knowing that what you’re building matches who you actually are. From leading from your heart instead of from fear.

That’s what Justin discovered. And that’s what he’s willing to talk about openly, despite the controversy and backlash that will inevitably come.

The question is: are you ready to have this conversation with yourself?
