Unshakable Presence® and the Word That Made Her Sick

The Modern Problem
The personal development world is full of people saying similar things. Some are thriving and some are not. Rachael-Jayne Groover spent her first two years in the United States making 350 dollars a month, in Ashland, Oregon, surrounded by both groups, trying to work out why.
The Hidden Pattern
She saw one group throwing spaghetti at the wall, going unnoticed. The other could still a room, even when they spoke quietly. She is clear that this second group did not necessarily have better lives or have everything together. What they had was presence, which she describes as the energy to pull someone into the present moment and out of their head.
The Assumption We Carry
Most of us assume presence is either a gift or a performance. She says she saw both in that second group: some were lucky to have it and some had developed it. She had built the skill as a singer, lost it when she had to speak instead, and rebuilt it by testing practices on herself and then on five women in her living room in Fort Collins. Within six months she had 35 women coming each week. She put 44 practices together, which became Unshakable Presence®.
The Clearer Lens
Along the way she did shadow work, a Jungian idea about the parts of ourselves we do not want others to see. The shadow that made her sick to her stomach the most was arrogant. She is Australian, and she describes tall poppy syndrome as the rule that you are not allowed to grow taller than another, or you get cut down to size. She wanted people to see her as top class in her field, and she was scared to say she was really good at what she did. As she integrated the shadow, admitting she is arrogant at times and superior at times, she says more energy came through her field and her magnetism increased.
The Implication For Life
The energy spent managing a trait you are afraid to claim is energy not available for the work. She makes a similar point about her business: Profit First reserves helped fund her retreat center, and when she dropped that discipline during COVID, the business went into debt. In both cases, what held up was not performance of how things should look but honesty about how they actually were.
One question to sit with: What am I calling humility that is actually just fear of being seen as too much?

Rachel-Jayne said something I keep turning over: every time she integrated a shadow, a trait she’d been taught to hide, more energy came through her field and her magnetism increased. Most of us do the opposite. We spend energy managing the parts of ourselves we’re afraid to claim, then wonder why we feel unseen. Her real argument isn’t about stage presence, it’s that the thing you’re most embarrassed to admit about yourself might be the exact thing that would make people trust you more, not less.
