Have you heard of money scripts? Do you know what yours are?

Money scripts are beliefs that you have toward money. These scripts were most likely formed while you were still young, probably between 5-13 years old. These unconscious beliefs can be positive or negative drivers of your financial success. These scripts are a mixture of truth, experiences and sometime fears and traumas. Since society does not allow us to talk freely about money and emotions, you have probably never examined or challenged your scripts.

Everyone may have one or more of the following scripts:

1. More Money Makes Life Better – thinking money buys happiness.

2. Money is Bad- Rich Are Bad. – The opposite thinking that money makes people unhappy or bad.

3. I don’t Deserve Money – lack of self-confidence.

4. I Deserve to Spend More Money – entitlement spending, thinking they deserve everything.

5. There will never be Enough Money – Misers who never spend.

6. There will Always be Enough Money – usually found with people who grew up having everything handed to them, or those with who
assume God will take care of their needs. Both of these are based on the belief that our action or inaction has no results.

7. Money is Unimportant – An excuse for lack of planning or drive in one’s life.

8. Money will give Me Meaning – Thinking that money is the key to answering to all of life’s problems.

9. It’s not Nice to Talk about Money – People don’t like to talk about money, beliefs toward money, or share their mistakes.

10. If you are Good, God will supply all Your Needs – The belief that good karma or God will result in them being blessed with
the money they need.

Each of these scripts has a driving force. Some of them lead to destructive spending, lack of saving, and leading a life that is not lived to the fullest. Overcoming ourselves and our limiting beliefs leads to a richer life, and a better relationship with money as a tool to be used to our benefits.

Which money script describes you? Have you ever tried to overcome your script?

Great article Rocky and a nice “wake up call” for those who need it. I recall a friend announcing “When we win the lottery, we will be happy!” My husband’s reply was, “I am already happy. Although winning would be nice.” There are tons of unhappy wealthy people and tons of happy people who are not financially rich.” Thanks for the reminder.
